Camp Kildare an intergenerational camp, is situated on 5 acres of overlooking the Sandhills & Kildare waterways along the North Cape Coastal Drive in Western Prince Edward Island.
Camp Kildare was first opened in 1973 by the West Prince Camp Association. Camp Kildare was constructed on this piece of land leased from the Government of Prince Edward Island. Camp Kildare was originally opened to serve the needs of Western PEI. During this time the camp was used for Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, 4-H, church groups, recreation programs, reunions and private rentals.
In 1981 Scouts Canada assumed ownership and operated the facility for the next 28 years. During this period the camp was used for a wide range of operational uses, including community events, church groups, Scouts, family reunions, group functions, and more.
In 2009 Scout’s Canada decided not to renew their lease with the PEI Government and Camp Kildare closed it’s doors. In 2011 the Alberton Community Development Corporation Ltd. submitted an application to acquire the property with the goal to renew Camp Kildare to the facility in which it once was.
The Alberton Community Development Corporation Ltd. is a non-profit organization involved in community development. In order for the development group to revive Camp Kildare, renovations had to take place. The current camp sleeps 22 people with 6 bunks on one side of the camp and 5 bunks on the other side, is fully wheelchair accessible, has an industrial kitchen, a common area and a screened in area.
